Do You Need Travel Insurance for the Maldives? | Beyond…
Travel insurance is not listed as a Maldives entry requirement, but remote-island logistics make the right cover unusually important

Maldives Immigration does not currently list travel insurance among the requirements for a tourist visa on arrival . That does not make it unnecessary. A Maldives holiday often combines international flights, boats or small aircraft, prepaid resort nights and activities on islands some distance from major medical facilities. For most travellers, the useful question is therefore not whether to buy the cheapest policy, but whether the policy covers the parts of the trip that would be difficult or expensive to solve yourself: overseas medical treatment, evacuation, disruption, cancellation and any water activities you plan to do. Why the Maldives deserves a closer insurance check Geography changes the risk. The UK Foreign Office notes that the Maldives' fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé, while many resort islands can be several hours from emergency treatment. Australia's Smartraveller similarly warns that rescue and emergency services are limited and that reaching hospital from a resort island can take hours. This does not mean resort healthcare is poor. Many islands have doctors or clinics capable of dealing with routine problems. The issue is what happens when you need treatment beyond what is available on that island. For that reason, look carefully at medical evacuation or repatriation cover , not just the headline medical-expenses limit. Government travel advice from the UK, Australia and United States specifically recommends insurance that can address unexpected medical evacuation in the Maldives. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or take regular medication, confirm the insurer's requirements rather than assuming standard cover applies. Check disruption cover against your actual transfer The second Maldives-specific issue is the journey between Velana International Airport and your island. A resort reached by speedboat creates a different disruption risk from one reached by seaplane. Trans Maldivian Airways confirms that seaplanes operate only from sunrise to sunset and recommends arriving in the Maldives by 15:30 if you want to reach a seaplane resort the same day. If your international flight is severely delayed, you could therefore face an unexpected night near Malé and lose part of a prepaid resort stay. Weather or operational disruption can also affect the return journey. Before buying insurance, ask whether the policy would cover the consequences relevant to your itinerary: additional accommodation, missed resort transfers, unused prepaid accommodation, delayed departure or a missed onward flight. Do not assume that a policy described as offering “travel delay” automatically covers every one of those situations. Definitions, waiting periods, exclusions and maximum payments vary. If you are still deciding between transfer types, the Beyond Sunset Maldives Field Notes and Maldives journey ideas are useful places to consider the transfer as part of the whole trip rather than an afterthought. Diving and water activities need a separate look A Maldives holiday can include snorkelling, diving, surfing, jet skiing, parasailing and other water-based activities. Your ordinary travel policy may not treat them all in the same way. Smartraveller specifically advises travellers to check activity exclusions and notes that additional cover may be needed for activities such as scuba diving. For divers, check more than whether the word “scuba” appears in the policy. Look at permitted depth, certification requirements, whether diving can be the main purpose of the trip, search-and-rescue or evacuation provisions, and treatment for diving-related injuries. The same principle applies to expensive equipment. Camera systems, dive computers and other specialist gear may exceed standard baggage or single-item limits. A good Maldives policy should match the trip you are actually taking. A couple spending five nights at a speedboat resort and mostly relaxing by the beach has different exposure from a diver travelling to a remote atoll by seaplane, or a family combining several islands. Before purchasing, map the policy against your flights, resort transfer, prepaid accommodation, planned activities, medical needs and equipment. If you would like help getting those travel arrangements clear before comparing cover, you can share the practical details through Beyond Sunset's private journey brief ; insurance itself should then be selected directly with an appropriately authorised insurer or adviser.
